Tools & shop supplies

Your tools & shop supplies are some of the most important things you're ever going to own (at least if you're an engineering minded sort of person).  Your shop can either be a well organized place where everything goes smoothly because of your layout, or it can be a very poorly organized place that creates delays for you at every step in every process.  This guide will show you how to organize your tools & shop supplies.

The first thing you'll want to do is sort all of your different tools into piles.  You can divide them in multiple ways, but the two best ways are either by type or by task.  If you know you're doing certain tasks over and over again, putting all the tools for that task in one pile is a fine way to do things.  If you do a wider variety of projects, you will probably want to sort by type (power tools, hand tools, garden tools, and so on).

Next, you're going to need to determine how much space is needed for each so you can decide on the appropriate place for each set of tools or supplies.  In order to find out how much space you have, clear absolutely everything out of your shop area except the piles of tools and other mandatory objects.  Now, match up areas with available space to the space needed for your categories of tools.

In order to expand your space, use tools hangers and tool boards, hanging tools from pipes, and so on.  You can easily double, triple, or even quadruple your available space by maximizing your vertical space.  Once you have done so and put all the tools in their proper places, label the sections to remind yourself and help anyone who's assisting you.
