The reality is, only seasoned mechanics really have the ability to maintain and prepare a rally car for the races.  The rally car supplies you need are not the sort you're going to find at a typical Autozone, and even if you could, without the proper education, you're not likely to be able to make these supplies work for you.  Most of the mechanics, and even many of the racers, have degrees in mechanical engineering or similar.

However, if you are an expert, or want to become one, there are a few needed rally car supplies to get you going.  The first is to get a used car that you can modify for the races.  Depending on exactly what type of racing you intend to do, and what style you intend to use, you're going to get a different car.  The age of the car, the type and style of the car, and your budget are all going to adjust according to what sort of racing you do and how serious you are about rallying.  In general, you will want a manual transmission and an aerodynamic sedan for your starting model, but you will want to do you own research to see what will work best for you.
